The Butterfly Logo and Mental Health

This page is about the butterfly logo, mental health counseling and what that has to do with liminality: A time to reassess.
Using a butterfly as my logo came to me after reflecting on my own painful mental health transition. The caterpillar’s metamorphosis became a symbol to me of the difficult emotional transformations we all experience in life. I came to see it as this moment before you reach your destination, but after you’ve left your starting point.
It’s the moment when Tarzan has grasped the next vine, but hasn’t let go of the last.
This is the space between what was and what’s to be. You know this space. Before the butterfly leaves the cocoon, there’s the chrysalis. Inside, the caterpillar undergoes a dramatic transformation, hidden from view by the cocoon’s hard exterior.
Novelists call this “liminality.” It’s the middle part of a novel after an incident has occurred to profoundly impact the protagonist but there’s been no resolution, yet. The transition is often marked as uncomfortable and a period of waiting. It’s the middle of your story.
