St. Pete, Clearwater, Tampa Food Addiction Counseling
Food is a life-sustaining source of energy, nutrients, fiber and even water that our body requires to function. It nurtures and fuels us, and we literally cannot live without it. However, there is an unhealthy, addictive relationship that many people have with food, and it can be deadly. Overeating, stress eating, junk food cravings, binge eating, etc. signify a risky relationship with food, and food addictions are leading to obesity, morbid obesity, malnutrition, chronic disease, mobility disabilities and even death.
There is hope—Therapeutic Counseling has been highly effective in treating food addiction and helping people live healthier, active and more abundant lives. Unlike addiction to alcohol and drugs, where you can and should stop drinking alcohol and taking illicit drugs, you cannot stop eating. Therefore, specialized treatment from a trained counselor is key to developing the skills and working through the therapy necessary for recovery.
Here are some of the consequences as a result of our relationship with food in the U.S.:
- 67% of adults are overweight.
- 33% of adults are obese.
- Approximately 12.4% of children age 2 to 5 and 17% of children age 6 to 11 are overweight
- 6% of adolescents (age 12 to 19) are overweight
- Obesity is associated with over 112,000 excess deaths due to cardiovascular disease, over 15,000 excess deaths due to cancer, and over 35,000 excess deaths due to non-cancer, non-cardiovascular disease causes per year, relative to healthy-weight individuals
- Food addiction is causing people to eat themselves to death!
However, like all addiction treatment, there are alternative choices and there are many ways to eat balanced, enjoyable and healthy foods.
